Ama ebi means 'sweet prawn' in Japanese, and one taste explains the name. These small, delicate cold-water prawns are eaten raw in Japan, where their soft, almost creamy texture and natural sweetness make them a sushi bar favourite. Ours are peeled and ready to serve, so you can lay them straight onto rice for nigiri or enjoy them as sashimi.

Each 115g pack holds 30 prawns, serving 2 to 3 people.

Why you'll love it

  • Peeled and ready to serve raw
  • Naturally sweet, soft texture
  • Perfect for nigiri and sashimi
  • 30 prawns per 115g pack
  • Serves 2 to 3

How to serve

Defrost in the fridge, keeping them sealed, and serve chilled. For nigiri, lay two or three prawns over a small oval of sushi rice with a touch of wasabi. As sashimi, serve with soy sauce and a little grated ginger. They can be blowtorched for a few seconds for a lightly seared finish, but their texture is at its best raw.

Delivery & storage

All our seafood is frozen to lock in quality from sea to doorstep. Keep frozen until needed and defrost in the fridge before serving. Once defrosted, eat within 24 hours and don't refreeze. Free delivery Tuesday to Friday on orders over £75, or collect from us if you're near South Ruislip.

FAQs

Are they eaten raw?
Yes. Ama ebi are traditionally served raw, which is when their sweetness and soft texture are at their best.

How are they different from ordinary prawns?
Ama ebi are cold-water prawns with a softer texture and sweeter flavour than the warm-water prawns most of us cook with.
