Unagi, freshwater eel, is a true delicacy in Japan, where it's traditionally eaten on the hottest days of summer. This fillet is prepared kabayaki-style: grilled so the excess fat renders away, then glazed with a sweet soy-based sauce until beautifully caramelised. It arrives already cooked and sauced, so all you need to do is warm it through.
Each pack contains 1 fillet.
Defrost in the fridge, then warm under a hot grill for 3 to 4 minutes, in the oven at 180°C for 8 to 10 minutes, or briefly in the microwave, until piping hot. Brush with a little extra unagi sauce for a glossy finish. Serve sliced over steamed rice for unadon, the classic eel rice bowl, or use in sushi rolls and nigiri.
All our seafood is frozen to lock in quality from sea to doorstep. Keep frozen until needed and defrost in the fridge before serving. Once defrosted, eat within 24 hours and don't refreeze. Free delivery Tuesday to Friday on orders over £75, or collect from us if you're near South Ruislip.
Is it ready to eat?
Yes, it's fully cooked. It's best enjoyed warm, when the glaze turns glossy and the flesh softens.
What does kabayaki mean?
Kabayaki is the Japanese method of grilling eel and basting it repeatedly with a sweet soy, mirin and sugar glaze.
