Bigger and meatier than the mussels most of us know, New Zealand greenlip mussels are named for the vivid emerald edge on their shells. They're farmed in the clean coastal waters of New Zealand and have plump, tender meat with a sweet, delicate flavour. These come on the half shell and individually frozen, so you can cook exactly as many as you need, straight from the freezer.
Each 800g pack holds 25 to 30 jumbo mussels, serving 4 to 5 people.
Greenlip mussels can be cooked from frozen. To steam, place them in a wide pan with a splash of white wine, garlic and butter, cover and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until piping hot. To grill, top each mussel with garlic and herb butter, or parmesan and breadcrumbs, and grill on high for 4 to 5 minutes until bubbling. They also make a showpiece on the BBQ. Take care not to overcook them, as the meat shrinks and toughens.
All our seafood is frozen to lock in quality from sea to doorstep. Keep frozen until needed; these can be cooked straight from frozen. Free delivery Tuesday to Friday on orders over £75, or collect from us if you're near South Ruislip.
What's the difference between greenlip and blue mussels?
Greenlip mussels (Perna canaliculus) are found only in New Zealand. They're much larger and meatier than the blue mussels common in the UK, and they're usually sold on the half shell rather than whole.
Why are they on the half shell?
Removing one shell means they cook evenly, take toppings beautifully and go straight from pan to plate.
