Soft shell crabs are a delicacy across Asia and the US, and once you've tried one you'll understand why. Crabs grow by moulting, shedding their hard shell, and for a short time afterwards the new shell is soft enough to eat. Taken at exactly this moment, the whole crab can be cooked and eaten, shell, legs and all, with sweet, juicy meat inside a crisp coating. Ours come from South-East Asia, already cleaned and ready to cook.
Each pack contains 4 crabs of approximately 80g each.
Defrost in the fridge and pat completely dry. Dust in seasoned cornflour or dip in tempura batter, then deep-fry at 180°C for 3 to 4 minutes until crisp and golden, turning once. Stand back as they go in, as moisture inside the crab can make the oil spit.
Serve whole with lime and chilli mayonnaise, tuck into a steamed bao bun, or slice into a spider roll, the classic soft shell crab sushi roll.
All our seafood is frozen to lock in quality from sea to doorstep. Keep frozen until needed and defrost in the fridge before cooking. Free delivery Tuesday to Friday on orders over £75, or collect from us if you're near South Ruislip.
Can you really eat the whole crab?
Yes. Once cleaned (with the gills, face and apron removed, which we've done for you), the entire crab is edible.
Why is it called a spider roll?
The crispy legs poke out from the ends of the roll, like a spider's.
